HOME GUTTED BY FIRE
OWNER AWAY ON HOLIDAY In the early hours of this morning a seven-roomed wooden dwelling at 24 Loyalty street, South Dunedin, was completely gutted by fire. The house was unoccupied at the time, the owner, Mr William L. Wallace, being on a holiday visit to Otautau, while his wife was holiday-mak-ing at Gore. The City Fire Brigade was summoned to the outbreak at 1.30 a.m. by a fireman from the South Dunedin station, who was on his way homo after being on duty. The flames had a firm hold before tho brigade arrived, and, despite the supply of a good pressure of watiy, the brigade found it impossible to save the house from complete; destruction. The cause of the fire is unknown. Particulars of insurance were not available this morning, but it is known that Mr Wallace had the house covered. SHEDS DAMAGED. Another outbreak of fire in some outhouses at the rear of Messrs Cossens and Black’s premises in Crawford street was extinguished by the brigade at 6.52 p.m. yesterday. The sheds, which contained nothing of value, were fairly extensively damaged, but no other loss was suffered. No details of insurances were available to-day.
