QUESTION OF REFERENDUM APPROVED BY GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, September 9. A joint meeting of the two parties of Government supporters to-day approved of a referendum on marketing. It is understood that the Government is also considering whether at the same time the Commonwealth should seek to obtain absolute control over aviation and broadcasting. CHANCES NOT FAVOURED. ADELAIDE, September 9. The Premier (Mr R. L. Butler) expressed the .opinion that the chances of success of a referendum to give the Commonwealth power over marketing were a thousand to one against. He could not conceive that the Commonwealth, in face of the opposition already expressed by some States, would waste £IOO.OOO on a referendum. REFERENDUM EARLY NEXT YEAR. SYDNEY, September 9. (Received September 10, at 11 a.m.) The ‘ Sydney Morning Herald’s ’ Canberra correspondent says an announcement that proposals for amendment of the Constitution will be submitted to Parliament and later to a referendum of the people will be .made by Mr Lyons (P.rime Minister) within the next few days. It is expected that the referendum will be held early in the new year.
