BURNSIDE STOCK SALES
SHEEP A LITTLE CHEAPER The exceptionally high rates obtained for fat sheep at last week’s sale at Burnside wore not equalled to-day, the average decrease in values being from about 2s to 3s a head. Prime heavy bullocks were, if anything, a little firmer than • a week ago, while the medium stuff, along with the cows, did not show any improvement in price. A small entry of fat cattle numbered 215 head: Tlie quality was below the standard recently shown,' ami there were only four trucks of really prime bullocks, the remainder being of poor type and showing the effect of the dry weather and the shortage of feed. There was a small entry of good cows and, heifers, the majority of the section being of plain and light stuff, which were actually only poor stores. Tlie sale opened on a race of unfinished cattle, and values were equal to last week, with a firming tendency. There was a truck of very nice bullocks to open the soiling in the next race, and bidding became keener. Prices rose from 5s to 10s, and the sale continued l on this level for the best quality until the finish. Prime medium-weights were also a little dearer than before, but plain medium bullocks and cows did not improve. The top price was £l6 12s 6d, this being obtained for a special line of bullocks from Stirling. _ Other good lots from the same district sold from £l4 10s to £ls. There was . a slightly larger yarding of fat sheep than at the two_ previous sales, some 1,400 being sent in. The quality was not equal to that shown a, week ago, the ewe section being specially weak. Only a few trucks of really rrood heavy wethers came forward, but the bulk of the section was made up of mediums, with a few pens of closewoolled sheep. The first consignment of shorn wethers of the season was forward, this coming from the Ashburton district. These sheep attracted a good deal of attention, as it is only on rare occasions that sheep are railed to the Burnside sales from so far north. There were very few good heavy ewes, the majority being of _ medium sorts, with a percentage of lights. Hoggets were in small supply, but the general quality was good. Competition from the start was keen, but at reduced rates, probably to the. extent ot from 2s to 2s 6d on tho best ewes and wethers. Medium wethers and ewes perhaps showed a slightly bigger drop. Twenty-four spring lambs were penned. The quality was fine, and the lambs wero sold under keen competition at late rates. Another very small yarding of store cattle was made up of two pens of steers and an odd lot of heifers and cows. Three-year-old steers brought £0 16s, and a pen of two-year-olds sold nt £3, while the heifers realised from 30s to £2 10s. Approximately 20 head of vealers displayed the poorest quality seen for months. iho muinbGr proved insufficient for requirements, and a keen sale resulted. The best sold to £2 ss, while the others brought from 25s to £2. Late rates_ wero obtained for the boner cows, which were of inferior quality. • „ , Totals of 116 fats and 81 stores comprised the yarding of pigs. Porkers sold from £1 12s to £2 12s, and baconers from £2 15s to £4. The former sorts were worth about 6Jd lb and tho latter about 6Jd.
