DAIRY COW LOSSES
SOUTHLAND’S SERIOUS PROBLEM [Per 'United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL September 27. The seriousness of the situation faced by the Southland dairy farmers as the result of the shortage of feed, due to the late spring, was revealed in a discussion by the Farmers’ Union. One estimate placed the losses of dairy cows in the area between Mataura and the sea coast at over 1,000. The intake has dropped in some dairy factories to one half, and others have not yet opened. In some cases the loss amounts to 50 per cent. The position is attributed to the last dry season and lack of nourishment in a lot of the turnip crops. The meeting resolved that steps be taken to obtain an immediate rebate of the railway freight on pressed hay from Canterbury to feed dairy stock, and that the matter be taken direct to the Prime Minister and the Southland M.P.s.
