WATER POLO
REP. CANDIDATES CHOSEN AN EARLY START [By Hookee.] The selectors (Mesrs D. C. Bannatyue and D. T. Woodtield) are to be commended on their early announcement of the names of players for practice with a view to selection in the two Otago water polo teams to take part in the New Zealand championships, at Dunedin in February,.and a start with practice is to be made at the centre’s polo hour at the Municipal Baths next Tuesday night at 8.45. ■■ Messrs P. A. Mathieson and H. V. Jerred, former Canterbury team mates, have been entrusted with the coaching of the team, and it would be difficult to obtain two more competent men in the Dominion. Eighteen players have been chosen, but the selectors have the right to addition or substitution at any time, so that attendances at practices should be well maintained. .No players of note have been overlooked, and it should be possible for the province to field two very strong teams, with competition for places in the A team very been. It is gratifying to know that 8. W. Jarvis will be available as he will enter senior ranks after the intermediate meeting at Hamilton, and he is undoubtedly one of the province s most promising players. From P. W. Harkoss, D. Pickard, and J. Swan, the province can select two first-rate goalkeepers, and Swan is a versatile player able to take his position - furthex up. M. Taylor is probably the cleverest player in -the province, and in form is the logical choice as Otago’s captain. He has led the province on numerous occasions. Pickard substituted for Harkess when the latter went down with measles in Christchurch in 1934, and did well. He has the distinction of having represented Otago at hockey and water polo. Swan, Pickard, and Harkess have all played for Otago previously, and so have B. Kerr, W. J. Jarvis, J. 0. Byrnes. V. Newall, Reg. Geddes, P. E. Mathieson, D. Newall, and J. D. -O’Driscoll in recent years, while A. Thomas and A. Harrod represented Otago some years ago. Harrod is a heady player with English experience, and only requires training to come back to form. J. Barry was chosen for Otago against the Rest last season, and N. Williams and 0. W. Elliott are both promising young players. H. D. Gillies is a fairly useful player, though scarcely up 'to representative standard. It is intended not only to have match , practice, but to arrange for a series of ’lectures to the players.
