CONFLICT OF EVIDENCE

INQUEST ADJOURNED DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 26. A conflict of evidence developed today at the resumed inquest, on the body of Norman Burgess (22), who died under an anaesthetic in Auckland Hospital on August 19. The father and brother both swore that deceased’s tongue. had been excised from his mouth before the post mortem, but the anaesthetist gave evidence that this had been done at the post mortem examination. The father also alleged that, although he had objected to a post mortem being held, he had not been notified when it was arranged, so that he might attend. Dr Bridgman, who performed the operation, said it was for an obstruction to the nose and also the tonsils. About 15 minutes after commencing, the patient suddenly stopped breathing. No operation had been done on the throat.

Replying to Mr Sullivan, who appeared for the relatives, witness could not explain the suggestion that tie tongue had been excised. Replying to the coroner, witness said deceased’s heart, which the post mortem had disclosed weighed 20pz, was the biggest he could recollect. The Coroner said that, in view of the matters raised, he would .adjourn the inquest until October 2. .
