OBITUARY

Ml T. J. RICKARDS

BRISBANE, September 26. (Received September 26, at 11 a.m.) The death is announced of Mr T, J. Richards, a fprrner Rugby Union international, after a long illness. Mr Richards toured Britain with the Wallabies in 1908-09, and was described by some critics as the world’s greatest forward of the time.

MR SYDNEY CHARLES RHODES

All his life employed as an apiarist, and a keen student of bees and_ bee keeping, Mr Sydney Charles Rhodes died last Friday at the age of 47. For some years he was engaged _as an apiarist in the Motueka district, and later received an appointment as apiarist of the State-controlled horticulture experimental farm at Tauranga (now believed to be out of existence). He was then appointed to the staff of the Department of Agriculture as apiary instructor and inspector for the Auckland district, and was transferred to the Dunedin office in March, 1917, to take over similar duties in the Otago and Southland districts. During the 18 years lie was engaged in Dunedin he made many friends, though he was very reserved. His hobby was gardening, and his flower displays at his home in Burnside were noted for their beauty and variety. He had a long association with the Horticultural Institute, and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. • He is survived by a widow and a young family of three sons and two daughters.
