“HUMBUGGING THE COURT”
• 1 CHARGE OF THEFT EXCUSE OF IIIMESS “ He’s simply just humbugging the court —there is no evidence of his illness except that he’s been on the spree,” said Chief-detective Young in the Police Court this morning, when John M'Dowell appeared on remand on a charge of theft of a suit coat, valued at £3, the property of Walter Leslie Kedzlie. M'Dowell failed to appear when called yesterday, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. Mr C. J. L. White, who appeared for the accused 1 , intimated that a plea of not guilty would be entered. Mr Young said that the accused was arrested on September 17 on this charge. He appeared before Mr Bartholomew and was.admitted to bail on his- own recognisance of £25 to appear yesterday. He failed to appear, and apparently had no reasonable excuse, a warrant being issued for his arrest. A remand was asked for to next nedTlm 'accused was remanded by the magistrate (Mr H.' W. Bundle, S.M.) to appear on October 2. Mr White applied for bail, and apologised for the accused’s non-ap-pearance. He had been ill. Bail was allowed on terms to be fixed by Mr Bartholomew, before whom the accused appeared originally.
