£l3 A TON

UNPRECEDENTED POTATO PRICES [Per United Press Association.] ASHBURTON, September 26. Unprecedented prices are ruling for potatoes in Ashburton. The demand from the Nortli Island, and the short supply here took the price to £l3 a ton to-day, the highest for over 35 years. For some time past Whites commanded £6 10s and Dakotas £7 10s, but in view of the lateness of the North Island’s new crop a heavy demand has been made by northern merchants, and the price lias been going up by 20s and 30s a ton each day in the past week. The price in 1902 was nearly £l3, and the highest till now was £lO, in October, 1928. It is anticipated that the demand will be maintained for at least a mouth, and the price will hold.
