No precedent in New Zealand law could be found' on a point raised in the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch this morning. William George M‘Neill was charged with writing a receipt liable for stamp duty without affixing a stamp, and with 12 charges of dividing moneys over £2 so as to avoid paying stamp duty. Evidence was given that M‘Neill collected rent totalling £2 5s fortnightly, and entered it as weekly payments of 22s 6d. Mr Bowie, for M'Neill, said he was unable to find a precedent for the case. Mr Levvy, S.M., offered to make the penalty £6, so that a test case could be made, but after further legal argument, a penalty of 20s on the first charge was entered, M'Neill being convicted and discharged on the others.—Press Association.
The through express from Invercargill was 20 minutes late in reaching Dunedin this morning, the delay being caused at the scene of the railway smash between Edendale and Kamahi. It was not necessary for the passengers to be transferred, the line having been sufficiently cleared of debris overnight to allow of through transit. During a visit to Central Otago, the secretary of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr 0. L. _ Ferem) made inquiries into the positions of boys who had been trained jn farm work at'Flock House under the scheme for the admission of the sons of deceased and returned soldiers, and who are now employed by farmers. He found ,in every instance that the lads were giving complete satisfaction, and that the training at the institution had proved of great benefit to them. At present, in fact, there was a waiting list of employers. . Contact is maintained with the boys when they obtain employment, and tneir- welfare is carefully watched.
Short-wave reception of wireless broadcasts from the 8.8. C. has been particularly good this week. On Monday last a local listener-in heard the announcement that in New Zealand the Ranfurly Shield, competed for by Rugby football teams from the provinces, had been won by Otago (pronounced “ Ottergo ”). Last night, in between references to Christmas trade preparations in Ireland and to the discussions at Geneva, it was announced that at a certain unemployment conference Sir John Simon had advocated emigration to the dominions on the part of people with sufficient capital to become established abroad. At the meeting Mrs Jones-Neilson, of New Zealand, proffered some information. Both these items, owing their origin to Dunedin citizens, show that this small part of the Empire is not neglected in the way of publicity. A number of boys evidently gob out of hand at Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon. Trees were mutilated by the roadside at Beach road, and a fire lighted under an oak tree. More serious was the escapade at the gasworks. An escape of gas from the holder was lighted, and very serious damage would have resulted had the lighted gas not been promptly put out.
