As evidencing the tremendous growth of the dairy industry, figures computed relating to the dairy factories of Manawatu and adjacent districts show that 14 butter companies last season manufactured 11,000 tons, which, valued at an average of 90s a cwt, represented £990,000. Taking the cheese factories within a radius of 50 miles of the city, the output is computed at 5,036 tons, which at 50s a cwt represents £296,000, making the gross value of .dairy produce at approximately £1,290,000. It is interesting to note from the files of 30 years ago that the Agricultural Department’s annual report showed that the total value of butter and cheese exported from New Zealand was only £1,878,500.
