A FORTUNATE ESCAPE. Missing his footing and slipping 600 ft down the surface of an ice-capped peak, J. Urquhart, who was on a trip in the Tararuas, had a fortunate escape from serious injury. The accident occurred on the summit of Mount Dundas. When his companions (C. R. Webb and A.. Coles) reached him TJuquhart was found suffering from abrasions to his hands, a sprained ankle, and severe shock. He was later brought in to Levin.— Press Assosciation. GIRL KNOCKED DOWN BY LORRY, Our Oamaru correspondent telegraphs Shortly after noon yesterday a sir! named Betty Thompson, aged 10, the daughter of Mr Ward Thompson, collided with a motor lorry and sustained cuts on the head and face, necessitating her removal to hospital. The little girl was proceeding across Severn street at the intersection of Lune street, when she collided with' the side of the lorry winch was proceeding down the hill, and driven by G. J. Frame, who was unable avoid the accident.

CRUSHED UNDER GAS RETORT. Thomas Henderson, an employee o{ Todd’s Brickworks at Waikiwi (Invercargill), lost his life yesterday afternoon when he was caught and crushed beneath a heavy gas retort.... Henderson, who was 60 years of age, was a married man. The accident occurred' when Henderson and two fellow workmen were shifting a gas retort through the door of the moulding room at the brickworks. The retort was oue of a number being manufactured for use at the gas works, and weighed Bcwt. It was of semi-cylindrical shape* measuring sft in height and 3ft across* and was manufactured of fireclay. As the men were transporting it on a narrow trolley Henderson, who was pushing from behind, was suddenly struck by the retort as it toppled backwards. He was bending down,and received^-upon his head the full force of the retort, which broke into Eieces as he was struck to the ground* >eath was practically instantaneous* MAN’S COLLAPSE. James Turner, aged 58 years, a resident of Kyehurn, collapsed in Brown’s dining rooms, George street, yesterday. He was conveyed to the Hospital by the St. John Ambulance.
