DEMANDS REFUSED
AMERICAN COAL INDUSTRY FSUft HUNDRED THOUSAND MEN ON STRIKE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, September 23. Four hundred thousand bituminous coal miners in 27 States were idle today, months of negotiations between the unions and the operators reaching a deadlock early this morning. The strike was called at the last minute. All the differences were settled excepting the rate of pay for piece mining and the demands of thd union for three cents a ton in excess of the owners’ offer. Later to-day it was said that the conference came within 1.5 cents of agreeing, but beyond that neither side was willing to go. The negotiations will be continued under the direction of the Department of Labour, and it is hoped to settle the strike before a shortage is felt. During the first day of the walk-out ■o disorders were reported.
