CONGRATULATIONS!

SOUTHLANDERS PLEASED There would be few, if any, Southlanders not pleased with Otago’s success. The Dark Blues have had a wonderful season, and, although suffering reverses/ at Timaru, Wellington, and Hawera, have finally and definitely proved themselves the foremost provincial side in the Dominion (writes “ Onlooker ” in the ‘Southland Times’). Their fast-moving backs and dashing forwards have won the admiration of the crowds everywhere, and after their magnificent win over the strong Auck-. land team it looked as if, at last, they must win the shield. Their first victory is a popular one, and Southlanders hail it. Probably the southerners have in view an Homeric struggle in- the first (probable) challenge game next season What a day that promises to be! Ami with the portents suggesting a greatly improved Southland side, supporters oi the Maroons are almost certain to be there (Carisbrook) to a man. Among the first to send congratulations was the president of the Southland Ilugby Union (Mr Harold Strang'. Apart from the wonderful spirit o. friendliness which exists between Otago and Southland, southerners are not slow to recognise merit. Otago deserved to win the shield, and every Southlander knows it. Good luck to_ the Blues. May they prove as worthy holders as they have been enthusiastic seekers of Dominion recognition.
