N.Z. BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

COMMENCE NEXT WEEK The biggest amateur boxing tournament held in Dunedin for many years will open next Wednesday, when the New Zealand amateur championships will commence at His Majesty’s Theatre. The entries number 73, which almost constitutes a record, and 18 associations are represented. Some of the best amateur boxers in Australasia;are taking part, including several who competed for Australasian titles at Invercargill last season. These are W. How-

son (who won both New Zealand and Australasian middle-weight championships), G. Muir (who represented New Zealand in the Hght-heavy-w'eight class), R. Boyle (the New Zealand flyweight champion), and 0. Gordon (who won the Australasian feather-weight championship and is one of the cleverest amateurs New Zealand has produced). Much interest will centre on the appearance of Bill Purdie, who won the Australasian welter-weight title in 1933, for he is one of the smartest glovesmiths Auckland has ever had. One of the famous Keeney clan, Don Keeney, is coming from Gisborne to contest, the

welter-weight division, and in nearly every class Otago is well represented. One of Wellington’s best will be T. Arbuthnot, who beat W. 'G. Parris, the New Zealand welter-weight champion, recently. There are far more experienced boys taking part than usual, and a high standard should be, maintained throughout. From Rakaia, the newest association, comes W. M. Lister, who will fight in the light-heavy-weight class, and who has wins to his credit over A. J. Bourne, the New Zealand heavy-weight champion last year. Full particulars are advertised and popular prices are being charged.
