"WILL LEAVE THE CHAIR"
MR JAMES WALLACE’S THREAT EDUCATION BOARD QUESTIONING A threat that he would leave tha if members persisted in asking for his reasons for upholding a school committee election, was made by Mr James Wallace at to-day’s meeting of the Otago Education Board. The Chairman reported having obtained further information about the, Teaneraki Committee election, and as,a result he had decided to uphold the election. Mr H. M. Wilson wrote protesting against the board’s decision. Mr W. Cooper "asked for reasons for the chairman’s decision. Mr Wallace declined to give hia reasons. The board had appointed him to consider the regularity of the election, and he had given his 'decision. The request was persisted. “ If you ask for that I shall certainly leave the chair,” replied Mr Wallace. Mr Cooper: Would it be discourtebus to ask that the correspondence be read? , ' Mr P. M'Kiulay said it was not a question of interfering at all. The board members should know the chairman’s reasons so that they could answer any questions. Mr Wallace; I am not at all adverse to giving my reasons, but I am not going to have my actions traversed in that way. _ Mr Cooper: It places 'me in an invidious position. If I cannot answer the questions they will say “ That is what we put you there for.” A Member; Tell them to ask the chairman. “If yon say much more I will b* out of the chair,” declared_Mr Wallace, and the board immediately en< dorsed his action. :
