RANGERS ' POWERS

-OBJECTION MADE TO GUN CONFISCATION [Per United Press Association.] CHIIISTCHU BCH, June 21. Objection to the confiscation of guns by rangers when the names and addresses of the men concerned could have been taken was expressed by a member at the meeting of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. He said the action had aroused resentment among sportsmen. The President (Mr F. Steans) said the matter was a delicate one at present, and the council would have an opportunity next meeting for discussion. He had instructed the secretary to notify the men that the guns would be returned to them if they gave an undertaking that they would be available to the council when necessary. He thought they had no need to worry over the position'. Mr I. Gray: Is it necessary to have the gun for a conviction P Mr Steans: The powers of rangers are laid down in the regulations, and sometimes are misread. Actually it is not necessary for a ranger to confiscate. Ho has the powers of a constable, and can go no further. The matter then dropped.
