MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Fire Board was hold yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs J. Wilson (chairman), W. A. Scott, F. T. Anderson, F. Wilkinson, H. A. B. Brabant, J. L. Salmond, and S. B. Macdonald. The Superintendent of the City Brigade (Mr J. J. Salmon), in his report for the month of May, stated that the total number of calls received at headquarters was thirty-one. This total represented seven fires, nineteen chimney fires, and five false alarms (malicious two, justifiable one, and automatic two). The most serious fire was at Messrs Hogg and Co.’s joinery factory, the damage amounting to nearly £5,000. The stock in a shop in Princes street occupied by Mr T. L. Begg was damaged by fire and water. The damage to the building was not severe. Seven chimney fires were attended from the Central, eight from South Dunedin, and four from the Roslyn stations. . The causes of fires were: Spark from machinery 1, overheating 1, lighting fire with kerosene 1, defective hearth 1, defective chimney 1, matches 1, unknown 1. The property affected was: Joinery factory 1, outhouse 1, car 1, private hotel 1, skewer factory 1, shop and dwelling l; workshop 1. The staff, which was at full strength, had been engaged on ordinary duties. No special work had been undertaken. The plant was in good working order. The water pressure at the various stations had been: Central—9 a.m., 801 b; 9 p.m., 1201 b. South Dunedin—9 a.m., 801 b; 9 p.m., 1301 b. Roslyn—9 a.m., 1201 b; 9 p.m., 1501 b. The St. John ambulance travelled 931 miles a"nd transported 118 patients.—The report was adopted. Mr Macdonald, referring to the stationary water pressures taken at the Central, South Dunedin, and Roslyn stations, said ho would like to see the flow of water in the mains at certain points in the city and St. Kilda tested each month. The stationary pressures were valuable to the brigade, and the tests bo suggested would be of material advantage.—Superintendent Salmon informed the board that the taking of flow tests would not entail any trouble, and the board decided to carry Mr Macdonald’s suggestion into effect. The General Committee reported that accounts amounting to £1.036 19s 5d had been passed for paynient.
