THROUGH ROAD TO MILFORD
GISBORNE'S ADVERSE COMMENT [Per United Press Association.] GISBORNE, June 19. Adverse comment on the action of the Government in spending a largo sum of money on a road to Milford Sound, which would be used mostly for pleasure (notwithstanding that unemployment funds were to be utilised) was made at a meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce to-day, and it was suggested that a protest should be made to the Government. Speakers said it required £300,000 to put the Napier-Wairba line in order, but the Government was spending £250,000 on a road merely for a scenic route. After a discussion it was decided to write to the district members of Parliament asking them to place the needs of the district before Parliament, with special emphasis on the requirements for railway communication.
