MISSIONERS FROM ENGLAND

All Saints’ Church welcomed Captain Beck, the leader of the flying column of the Church Army visiting New Zealand, and Captain Grace, the last arrival from Loudon. Speaking on Monday night, the vicar of All Saints’, (the Rev. _W. Hardy Johnson) recalled memories of the army’s work in England and in the Mediterranean. Captain Beck thanked the congregation for the welcome, and, deprecating “ mere emotional ” stuff, said that ‘ Fifteen Years in H.M. Prisons ’ would be his subject to men on Sunday afternoon. A sister comes on Friday to speak to women in the afternoon. The two captains will conduct the services- at All Saints’ on Sunday, the last day of their visit. Prebendary Wilson Carlile founded the Church Army, the pioneer among such movements for social and moral as well as spiritual uplift at Home, where their vans, captains, and sisters are familiar in every county, and not least in the slums and their unemployment centres. The Church Army has the largest collection of lantern slides in the world.
