NEW ZEALAND’S LONDON
According to the .May number of 'The R.L.A. Monthly ’ there is no place in Now Zealand which bears tho actual name London. One tiny settlement exists called " Raima ” and that is the rendering of !I London ” in the Maori tongue. “It seems that the notion of a London, Now Zealand, did enter the mind of one man at least, about a century ago. At command of the Now Zealand Land Company in 1839 one, Samuel Cobham, of Newgate street, did actually draft out a plan for Wellington, New Zealand, which was to be thoroughly remindful of our London. Tho city was to lie on either side of a broad .stream (the Hutt River) upon one bank of which was Tho Tower, and it was to contain a Covcnt Garden, a Billingsgate, a Drury Lane Theatre, a Customs House (by the river), and a Smithficld Market. But Wellington’s nionccr settlers had other ideas!”
