EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH

THE COMMITTEE’S PLANS DR BEEBY'S DUTIES Unit*!) Prem Amocutiok.l WELLINGTON. June IS. At a meeting last week the New ZeaCouncil of Educational Research appointed as its executive officer Dr C. E. Beeby, who is at present acting professor of philosophy at Canterbury University College. Dr Beeby, who holds the M.A. degree (N.Z.), with first class honours in philosophy, and is a Ph.D. of Manchester, has had a wide experience of the methods of research in psychology and education, not only in New Zealand, : but also in Britain and the United States. The Council of Educational Research was set up by the Carnegie Corporation of New, York, and is being financed by that body for five years. The corporation took this action after it was satisfied h,V the report of a small committee that there was a w’ide field for educational research in this country, and that the Movement would have the hearty cp-oporatiou of the Education Department, the University, the education boards, the secondary schools, and other educational bodies. Applications for the post of executive officer, who will direct the. researches approved by the council, were received from England, the United States. Australia, arid New Zealand, and, in view of the importance of the position, a very full and careful inquiry was necessary before an appointment could be made. In August Dr Beeby will visit Australia to. make contact with officers of a similar body there and inquire into its organisation and methods. On his return the council will begin to establish a local, branch of the movement in each university centre. Dr Beeby will not be free from his duties at Canterbury College till November, but in the meantime a small sub-committee is preparing a draft plan for research, and it is expected that active operations will begin early in the new year. Dr Beeby will be stationed at Wellington.
