THWARTED DEMONSTRATION
HEW POINT RAISED POWER TO PROHIBIT PROCESSION CHALLENGED [Per United Press Association.! PALMERSTON N., .Juno 18. The disturbance which occurred in Raugitikei street, Palmerston North, on the morning of June 9. when the ■police prevented a procession through the city of unemployed, had its sequel in court to-day, when the hearing of the charges against the men arrested on that occasion was commenced. These included resisting the police, obstructing the police, and inciting to lawlessness A temporary halt occurred, however, when counsel for the defence raised the issue that the City Council had no authority to prohibit the procession under the Municipal Corporations Act. It was contended that while the council could ban traffic in .toto it could not prohibit just one section of it. The magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout. S.M.) reserved his decision on the point, declaring it a vital one.
