QLO BOYS AGAIN VICTORIOUS
(From Our Oamaru Correspondent.)
Ideal weather conditions prevailed on Saturday, and a large attendance of the public was present at the Showgrounds to witness the first matches of the third round for the Citizens' Shield. Old Boys improved their position, by defeating Excelsior after a stern struggle, and are now four points in the lead. With only two more games to play it looks as if their chances of annexing the shield are excellent. After a very even game Maheuo emerged Victorious over Athletic bv three points to nil. OLD BOYS 14, EXCEI/siOR 6. In a game full of incident Old Boys proved superior to Excelsior and maintained their unbeaten record. The backs on both sides threw the ball about in good stylo, but Old Boys had more finish. Excelsior made desperate efforts to pull the game out of the fire, and nearly succeeded, Harle being thrown out at the corner twice in the last five minutes. Excelsior (Blue) won the toss, and Kinder kicked off for Old Boys (Bed), the latter facing a particularly strong sun. The Reds carried play to the Blues’ line, where a scrum was ordered, from which Ludemann fell over to score the first try., Easton narrowly missed the kick. Old Boys 3, Excelsior nil. After a period of play in midfield the Old Boys' forwards carried play to the Bines’ territory, but Davey drove them back and the Blues’ forwards carried on. The Reds were penalised for a scrum infringement and Donaldson kicked an easy goal. Old Boys attacked from the kick off, the backs going away in a good movdh\enb which, ended in Cameron being pushed out at the corner. Blues sent play back to halfway and Davey further improved their position with a good line kick. From the line-out Knight sent his backs away, Wilson being held up on the line. Wallace cleared, but the Blues again pressed hard and Easton forced. Taylor failed to find the line after the drop out and Favnilton sent the Red backs away on a rush that ended in Cameron forcing his way over in the corner for agood try. Easton missed the kick. Old Boys again took a turn at attack, and Taylor was penalised. Easton kicking a good goal. In the second spell the Red forwards took up the attack, and the referee awarded them an obstruction try, Easton converting, and the game ended — Old Boys 14, Excelsior 6. Mr L: Ward controlled the game. MAHENO 3. ATHLETIC 0. On No. 2 ground the game between Maheno and Athletic resulted in a win for the. former by three points to nil after a fairly ragged game. Maheno played three juniors, and Athletic was without the services of L. Park. The play for the most part was confined to the forwards, with occasional passing rushes by the backs, but faulty handling resulted in these attempts breaking down. The country team established a lead early in the game, and maintained it to the finish. Several opportunities were thrown away by both teams, but the final score was a good indication of the respective merits of the teams on the day’s play. A. Clark scored for the winners. Mr G. Knowles was the referee. JUNIOR RESULTS. Old Boys 7. School 6. Athletic ‘23, Maheno 0. third grade. Old Boys 6, St. Kevin’s 3. Southern won by default from Excelsior.
