SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C
UMTALI AND MOBILE WINNERS The Winter of the South Canterbury Jockey Chib was held in bright sunshine and before a good attendance. The course was in splendid winter order, but on the slow .side. The racing was interesting, but until the last two races, backers of first favourites had a bad time. ’ The locallyowned mare, Cleaner, had the principal handicap won a long way from the post, and scored ter first success over ten furlongs in open company. The finish of the Steeplechase was robbed of a great deal of interest by .Barrington and Punchestown, who were racing with TJmtali at the second to last fence, falling. This left Umtali to score an easy win, and he was well handled on this occasion by J. Walker, who rode him into his fences harder than usual. After Mobile had won the concluding event, he had to survive a protest lodged by A. Russell, rider of Great Star, for interference at the turn into the straight, which, after a lengthy hearing, was dismissed. The totalisator, which was worked on the 75-25’ per cent, system, handled £7,473 10s, as compared with £7,951 last year. Retailed results; — PUKAKI HURDLES HANDICAP, lOOsovs; second 15, third 10.
