OTAGO ATHLETIC CLUB

The above club held the second race of its Beale Cup series from Beale’s Hotel, Green Island, to North Taieri, and return via Wingatui, Weather conditions were perfect and the roads in good order. A field of fifteen riders faced the starter:—F. Beale, A. Wills, W. Lucas 7min, H. Pine, G. 0. Johnstone, I. Guthrie, J. Wells 6J-, G. Heasley, W. Hogg 3Jmin, H. Cooper, M. Cannon 21, A. Mackie, A. Hay, C. Hansen, R. Wilson-Pyne scratch. Guthrie, Johnstone, Pine, and Wells caught the limit men at Fairfield, and Beale, Guthrie, and Wells went on ahead at Saddle Hill. These riders led at the turn, and were followed by Hogg, who was on his own, as Heasley had punctured at the Aerodrome. Cooper and Cannon followed a good way back, and then came Mackie, Hansen, and Wilson-Pyne, Hay having had a mishap at Saddle Hill. Hansen dropped out of the scratch bunch shortly after the turn. Cooper left his bunch at Mosgiel Junction, and set out on his own, but the front men were then going over the top of Saddle Hill, closely followed by Hogg, who picked them up at Fairfield, and led them down past the brickworks and into Green Island. In a good sprint for the line Hogg held his advantage to win by a good length, with Guthrie the same distance in front of Beale, who just headed Wells by half a wheel.
