OLD RIVALS DRAW
WELL-CONTESTED GAME AT BISHCPSGOURT Kaikorai and Alhambra staged a stermious struggle at Bishopsc-onrt, where a well-contested game ended in a draw. Kaikorai scored a try and a penalty goal to Albambjra’s two tries. The teams were as follows:—Kaikorai: Hayes, Kean, Laing, Johnston, Murray, Henderson, Francis, Rodgers. Duncan, Lungley, Sutherland, Murphy, Allan, Gibson, M'Laughlan. Alhambra: Dixon, Feathers, Goughian, Williamson, Walker, Oallendar, Davis, Frood. Campbell, Bain, Earle, Robinson, King, Davis, Souter. Kaikorai were first on the attack, a back movement taking play into the Reds’ twenty-five, but the ball went into touch. A strenuous struggle for possession ensued in midfield, and both sides indulged in a good deal of kicking, from which neither side gained any great advantage. One kick to the Kaikorai line brought danger, but an infringement caused a scrum. King was prominent in another Bama rush, and then Dixon failed with a free shot. The Bamas kept up the pressure, and a combined rush resulted in Callender going over at tho corner. Dixon failed with the kick. 3-0. The Kaikorai forwards retaliated by working play into Red territory, where passing by the backs broke down, and Williamson found the line with a good kick to halfway. A further dribbling rush by the hill forwards took play to within striking distance, but Francis failed to gather in a pass from a line-out. and Walker dribbled clear. The Bamas won an interchange of kicks, and then Davis broke right through and passed to Williamson, whose pass infield was intercepted. Kaikorai had a turn on attack, but passing by the backs broke down. Alhambra returned play to their opponents’ territory, and a good opportunity of scoring was lost through bad fumbling. Before the spell ended King broke through and transferred to Conghian, who scored near tho corner. Dixon again failed with tho kick. Half-time scores:— Alhambra 6 Kaikorai 0 Almost immediately after the resumption Kaikorai launched a sudden attack. Henderson received from Francis, and penetrated the defence before banding to Murray, who raced over for a good try wide out. Francis failed to convert. 6-3,
More passing by the Blue backs had the Bamas on the defence, Dixon clearing when Kean short-punted. Kaikorni were now having much the better of the play, and Francis was successful with a free kick at goal from a handy position after having failed with a shot well out. This effort by Francis equalised the scores, and the excitement of the crowd increased considerably. When Walker charged down a kick from Uaing the Blues’ line was in danger, but the attackers failed to take adavntage of the opportunity. Both sides strove desperately to Open np the play, but the tackling quickly annulled these efforts. _ Dixon narrowly failed with a free kick from near the line, and then a hot attack by the Reds ended in a force down. A further effort was spoilt by off-side piny. Play hung around halfway for some time until Davis .secured from a scrum and found the line past Kaikorai’s twenty-five. From a scrum near halfway the ball Went out to Laiirg, who gained a big slice of ground before handing on to Kean, who, when forced into touch, dropped the ball, but Laing snapped it up and went over at the corner amid great cxetiement. The referee signalled a try, Tint the line umpire had his flag up, and the try was disallowed. From the play following the line-out the Reds were penalised, but Francis failed to goal. Another force down resulted. Play had returned to halfway when the final whistle sounded. Scores:— Kaikorai 6 Alhambra 6 Mr J. Pearce was the referee. -i. . ■.... SECOND GRADE. Southern 12.
