TAIERI ACCOUNT FOR 'VARSITY B After a patchy exhibition Taieri boat University 15 by 2o points to 11 at University Oval. The Students more than held their own in the first spell, coming out with a 11-0 lead. Taicri’s superiority dearly asserted itself in the
second half, the country team cracking on 19 points and completely outclassing their opponents. The teams; Taieri.—Murdoch, Murray, M'Skimraing, Slyfield, .It. Scott, Johnston, Bathgate, C. Phillips, Brondley, F. Scott. Findlay, J). Phillips, Barron, Brown, M'Lcod. ’Varsity B: MacFarlaud, Masked, Roy, Symes, Tuck, Ryder, Enuumel, Simcock, Wilson, Anderson, Mack, Muslin, Harrison, Cuddon, Satyanand. ’Varsity opened well by scoring within a minute and a-half of the kickoff. From a scrum Emanuel sent his backs off, Ryder taking a very difficult one-handed pass and transferring to Tuck, Roy, and Masked, the winger streaking down the line. He was pulled up, but the ball was * "eked over the line, and Cuddon, coming up fast, got there first. Symes failed. ’Varsity 3, Taieri 0. Another two minutes’ play saw Taieri draw level. A loose rush took them to within striking distance of the ’Varsity line, where M'Skimming snapped up the ball and sent Murray over for a very easy try. M‘Skimming failed. ’Varsity 3, Taieri 3. Taieri continued to dominate the game, and launched a series of hard attacks that'kept ’Varsity fully occupied. Infringements nullified several almost certain tries, and then ’Varsity, in trying to clear, were them, elves penalised. M'Skimming had an easy shot, and made no mistake about it. Taieri 6, ’Varsity'3. ’Varsity equalised in the same way within two minutes again. Symes- had a hard shot from well out, and kicked an excellent goal. Taieri 6. ’Varsity 6. Taieri held trie upper hand in the pluv that followed, and should have scored from several openings. Then the ’Varsity forwards broke away, Symes leading the rush to halfway, where he passed to Ryder. From herb Ryder had a clear run, and the Taien backs were not fast enough to catch him. Symes kicked a splendid goal rmht into the sun. ’Varsity 31. Taieri 6. . . . „
Taieri were on the attack right from the kick-off in the second spell. Findlay attempted a penalty goal from well out. but missed. After five minutes’ hard pressure Taieri succeeded in getting through, R. Scott going over at the corner at the head of a loose rush through the ’Varsity twenty-five. jrSkimming failed. ’Varsity 11, Taieri 9. Taieri were cracking on the pace now, and their backs were all over ’Varsity. The Students were penned in their own twenty-five, and a minute later D. Phillips scored, M'Skimming having an easy conversion. Taieri 1/1, ’Varsity 11. Showing definite superiority, Taieri added another throe points when Johnston cleverly kicked across the field to R. Scott, the five-eighth racing over wide. M'Skimming missed. Taieri 17, ’Varsity 11. Brown was the next scorer, Bathgate adding the extra two points with a good kick. Taieri 22. ’Varsity 11. The Students were a wellbeaten team, as R. Scott went over again to score with little opposition. Bathgate failed. Taieri 26, ’Varsity 11. "Varsity livened up in the closing stages, but with no further success,, and the game ended : Taieri 25 University B 11 .Mr F. Swete was referee.
