CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECTS

MOVE TO URGE LIFTING OF BAN The Wellington City Council and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce have both received a letter from the No More War Movement asking them to Support a petition to the Government to open the radio door more widely to the free discussion of vita] questions. Neither body did more than formally “ receive ” the letter. The City Council briefly discussed the subject, but the Chamber of Commerce did not. It is quite true, as the mayor said, that the matter is one for Parliament and not for the City Council. But it is not encouraging to find local bodies, whose members* are believers in free speech and are not slow to use the privilege, hesitating about expressing an opinion upon freedom of speech through the most influential channel that speech has. It may be assumed that the request for support has been sent to other authorities, and that sooner or later some enlightened public man will get up and start a discussion that will result in a real expression of opinion.
