It' is wjth pleasure that the information comes that the Broadcasting Board, after lengthy negotiations,, has succeeded ! obtaining permission to broad? cast vocal gems from the Gilbert and Sullivan light operas. On Sunday, June 24, listeners are to be given a selection of recordings of perhaps the most famous of the duo’s works, ‘ The Gondoliers.’ This will be broadcast through 4YA, 2YA, 3YL, and IYX, and on June 29 stations 4YO, 3YA, 2YC, and IYA will be responsible for a broadcast of the same opera. 'At approximately weekly intervals there will folloW presentations of ' lolanthe,’ ‘ Patience,’ ‘ Rnddigore,’ ‘ The •Mikado,’ ‘ The Yeoman of the Guard,’ ‘ Pinafore,’ and others. The success of 4YA’s old-time dance last winter has prompted the station officials to organise a similar broadcast this year. It is probable that this will take place , toward the end of next month, and as on the previous occasion it will be given “ atmosphere ” by the presence of a few dancers in the hall. : * l * * * The four main stations will observe the same schedule of times lor the broadcasting of information of the second test cricket match, as was done last week-end. * * ■* * So keen was the demand fqr sets in Auckland at the end of last month that in some cases those of reputable make Were sold without demonstrations being requested. A considerable increase in the demand for wireless apparatus also was experiepeed, and makers of sets found it difficult to ob-. tain the necessary supplies.
