POLICE COURT

SATURDAY, JUNE 16. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Joseph Patrick Hussey, a statutory first offender, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. Albert Percival Ritchie, who did not appear, was fined 20s, in default 24 hours. THEFT OF TEA. William George Deans pleaded guilty to the theft of 201 b of tea, valued at £2 9s, the property of William Henshaw. Chief Detective Young said that the complainant was, a motor transport proprietor, operating a service between Dunedin and Timnru. About three months ago, he delivered some cases of tea to a firm in Timaru, and one of the cases was damaged in transport. Tho case was returned to the complainant, and placed by him in his store in Vogel street. About a mouth ago the complainant had cause to inspect the case, and found that all the tea, which was in packets, was missing with the exception of two packets. Inquiries were,made by the police, and suspicion turned on the accused, who had been employed by the complainant. The accused admitted the theft of tea to the value of £2 9s. Sis pounds of tea valued at 14s Cd'had been recovered. The total value of the tea stolen was £3 13s 6d, but as the shed in which it was stored was somewhat open, it was possible that someone else had participated in the theft. The accused, who was fa single man, had never previously been in trouble. Tho accused was remanded in custody until Mouday, the probation officer to furnish a report in the meantime.
