THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
\ THIRD CONCERT OF SEASON A steady crescendo of success lias marked the career of the Dunedin Symphony Urchestra, and should be farther fortified in the programme chosen by Conductor De Rose for its third concert of the season, to be given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Wednesday evening next. , It is what is popularly known as a varied and interesting hill of fare, comprising the following (in order of rendition); —Preludes to Acts 1. and Til. ‘ Lohengrin ’ (Wagner), Symphonic Suite ‘ Scheherazade ’ (Bimsky-Korsa-koif), Scherzo Op. 16, »JCo, 2 (Mendelssohn), Adagio Pathetiqne (Godard), 1 Gopak ’ (Moussorgsky). and excerpts from ‘ Cavalleria Rusticana ’ (Mascagni). In addition the orchestra will be associated with that accomplished solo pianist Miss Koa Oliver (Mrs B. R. Nees) in Cesar Franck’s brilliant ‘Symphonic Variations,’ and to round off the entertainment Miss Florence Pacey (soprano) will sing three songs, one of them (‘ To the Angels ’) with ’cello obbligato by Mr L. E. Hunter. This is an evening’s entertainment that promises_ much pleasure and bespeaks exceeding competence on the part of the orchestra—a quality not found lacking to date. Of first musical significance is the Rim.sky-Korsafcofl suite, a modernist work of noble architectural scheme and great technical difficulty. It is a narrative-poem in musical terms, and an exceedingly dramatic narrative too—that of Sind bad, a treasured memory of our youth in prose, hfippily revived in this richly embellished music-drama. The suite has four movements, powerfully orchestrated and exceedingly impassioned, with a. conclusion (allegro molto) unrivalled as descriptive music, depicting the festival and the storm.
The ‘ Lohengrin ’ items are the ravishing slow movement intended to depict the vision of the Holy Grail and the dazzling; march I’toiue that ushers in the crucial Act HI.
it is, indeed, a programme that should excite much anticipatory pleasure.
