MONTEREY AND-yJ’ACI FIC COAST’STRIKE. J;‘ The Monterey brought 690 brigs of English and American mail, and this was unloaded immediately. Some of the ship's fruit cargo is on consignment to Christchurch, and it is expected that this will he transhipped by the Port Whaugarci. Feeling was running high on the wharf at Los Angeles on tho day the Monterey sailed. Some ■members of tho crew state that in a fracas which occurred one man had been killed, and a number injured. The purser, Mr It. Jose, was attacked and suffered a nasty cut over one eye. To-day ho made light of it, saying; “ A few roughnecks set on me, but beyond getting a bit of a mauling, I was none tho worse.’’ lie said it surprised him, because ho had. never boon molested before. The injury did not affect his programme for tho remainder of tho day, which included his wedding. This was celebrated according to schedule.
