PRECIOUS STAMPS

BIG PRICES PAID Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 13. (Deceived June 14, at 9 a.m.) The record price of- £5,000 was paid at Harmer’s auction for an envelope bearing the 1847 Mauritius twopenny blue and penny orange stamps, for which an American millionaire (Mr Arthur Hurd) originally paid 8,000 dollars. The dies for these stamps were made by a jeweller, and their value is due to the fact that he erred in engraving the words “ Post Office ” instead of “ Post Paid ” on the whole of the Mauritius section. Mr Hurd’s collection to-day x-ealised £33,000. The present London sale totals £65,000. The American portion, recently sold in New York, realised £47,000.
