GREEN ISLAND AFFAIRS.
TO TUB EDITOR. Sir, —I would like to suggest that something should be done by those in authority to relieve the distress that prevails in this district. Maybe the School Committee will be kind enough to hand over to the mayor the surplus cash raised at the recent Queen Carnival, unless, of course, it intends to emulate the Anderson’s Bay School Committee and give the scholars free mill: every day. This, indeed, would be a worthy expenditure. In dealing with borough affairs, it is pertinent to ask if the Works Committee or the council as a whale approves of the rubbish that has been used in bringing Exmouth street up to the necessary level, and, further, would it not be wiser and fairer to continue the kerbing and asphalt the footpath along North Taien road," where it. will be used, instead of say, what is being done in Teign mouth street, where there is very little traffic. In conclusion, it is interesting to note how the Finance Committee has evaded restoring the cut in wages, but, of course, 'this is not strange, ‘as it is Generally understood that it is the only body in and around Dunedin that employs non-union labour. I wonder it this is correct. —I am, etc., Obseiiter. June 13.
