OBITUARY

MR T. Y. CLARK ft* The death occurred’ at Christchurch of Mr Thomas Young Clark, aged 56. Born at Invercargill, he lived most of his early life in His father was a pioneer of that district, arriving there in 1862. Mr Clark was a builder by trade and later became well-known as supervisor of big constructional contracts. In this work be was helped by wide dominion and American' experience. Not a few of his large undertakings were done in his home town, where he was responsible for the erection of the Masonic Temple, Corporation Baths, and Newburgh Buildiijgs. He went to Christchurch foutf years ago, where ho supervised the construction of the new St. Elmo Courts Building, and later was responsible for the M'Dougal Art Gallery. At the time of his death he was engaged in the erection of the new Methodist Boys’ Orphanage at Papanui. The deceased was a keen bowler, and a, member of the Elmwood Club. Two years ago he was skip of its champion rink.—Christchurch correspondent.

MR J. G. ARMITAGE The death of Mr J. G. Armitage, who for many years was on the staff of Dalgoty and Company Ltd., is announced (wires our Christchurch correspondent). Mr Armitage Avas born at Stockport, England, in 1850, and came to New Zealand in the ship Japanese in 1865. He spent some time in Otago Avorking on the goldfields, and later was in the employment of Cobb ■and Co. as a saddler in the coaching days. Later he joined the staff of Dalgety and Co., and Avas with that firm for twenty-eight years till he retired in 1914. He Avas for sonic time a member of the E Buttery and of the Christchurch Volunteer Fire Brigade. He celebrated his golden Avedding seven years ago, and is survived by his AvidoAv, four sons, and one daughter—Messrs L, J. Armitage and R. G. Armitage (Auckland), J. A. Armitage (Christchurch) j E. C. Armitage (Dunedin), and Mrs E. M. Rogers (Christchurch).
