INSUFFICIENT GROUND FOR REFUSING BAIL ■ [Per United Pries Association.] AUCKLAND, June 13. The refusal of a magistrate to grant an accused person bail led to an application being made to Mr Justice Ostler to-day for the prisoners release. It was opposed by the police. The accused’s counsel said the magistrate had refused bail, mostly because of the accused’s past history, but he contended that it was not a proper ground for refusal. The judge said that previous convictions were not a sufficient ground for refusal. Unless it could be shown that the accused was likely to abscond from his bail there was no good reason, to refuse it. Counsel for the ■ prisoner said that there was no danger of absconding. After considering authorities the judge granted bail in £IOO with one surety of £IOO, conditionally on the accused reporting daily to the police.
