BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

j CATTLE VALUES INCLINED TO j WEAKEN Almost double the number of fat cattle forward last week was sent in tor to-day’s sale at Burnside, but while there was a brisk demand for prime medium-weight bullocks, the market generally showed an inclination to ease from par. There was a rise in price on all grades of lambs, but at -the 'start of the sheep sale the market was slow, and values were back a little. There was an entry of nearly 300 head of fat cattle. The yarding em braced some specially good bullocks, but the bulk of this class were medium and lacking in finish. Good heavy cows were prominent, and, as usual in this class, there was a fair percentage of medium and light sorts. Most of the butchers had consumed their supplies bought last week, and so were keen to -buy at the opening. Prices, therefore, were up on the first race, and in some cases showed a rise of fully 10s above, last week’s rates. The rise, however, was only temporary, aud prices ,soon • receded to last week’s values, ami at times lower still. For prime heavy cows there was a' good sale at increased rates, but medium and •light sorts were neglected, and did-not show any improvement on late rates.. The - best demand- was ’ for i prime-medium-weight bullocks, these , selling at from par to a slight increase in value, while heavy- bullocks could be quoted on a par with last week. Values eased'on the last race,, the chop being most noticeable on medium stuff. Taken.as a .whole,'the market was frofu par to a shade below' last week's parity. Thei top price was obtained for Air -W., L. Scott’s consignment from Matauva, this selling up to £ll 17s. 6d, • which •is about £1 above the highest price given at the previous sale. Another truck was offered on account of Mr C. W. Tripp, of-Mat-aura, realising to £ll, 7s 6d. Mr W. R. Peary, of Gimmerburn, also had a nice draft forward, for which he received £lO I7s 6d. ; . . , ! A fairly largo entry of fat lambs numbered some 1,000 head. Some specially good' quality was included in the penning. Exporters operated at increased limits, and in consequence prices for all grades showed a decided improvement. Approximately 2,000 fat sheep made up a large yarding. A fairly • large number of specially good ewes was forward, the percentage of heavy wethers being smaller than .of late. There was a bigger entry of medium wethers than has been the case for some time, and this grade was sought by freezing buyers at full market rates. There was also a. good proportion of medium ewes, and several pens of weedy and light sorts' were seen. A dragging opening market showed a decrease in prices, which remained about Is below last week until the paper went to press. It was thought that from the middle of the sale there might be an easing tendency. A large yarding of vealers in tho store cattle pens sold at late rates, and there was a very small yarding of cattle, only two or three pens of three-year-old steers and one pen of well-bred sorts being in. The latter brought £6 4s, and the others to £i ss. A small yarding of inferior quality boner cows sold at very low rates. The numbers in the pig pens were:— Fats, 135; stores, 71. Porkers sold from 35s to £2 ss, or equal to 5Jd lb, while the bacon pigs, winch met with keen competition, were worth about 6d lb, selling from £2 os to £3 16s.
