OPERATION AT SEA
STEWARD DEVELOPS APPENDICITIS [Per United Pre I ss Association.] AUCKLAND, Julie 11. . An operation for acute appendicitis was performed at sea abdard the the intercolonial steamer MOnpwai when the vessel was one day out from Sydney on her way to Auckland. The patient was an assistant steward, J. Gillies, single, aged twenty-six, belonging to Dunedin. The ship’s surgeon, Dr R. J. Boyd, performed the operation. The chief officer, Mr T. W. White, administered the anesthetic, and Mr L. R. Nunn acted as orderly. A room in the surgeon’s suite was used as a theatre. The weather being calm, it was not found necessary to stop the ship. The operation showed that complications had developed, including peritonitis. When the Monowai berthed tins afternoon the patient was removed to the Auckland Hospital. His condition was then believed to be serious, but reports later in the evening were more favourable.
