LEFT-HANDEDNESS

SUCH PEOPLE MORE INCLINED TO WICKEDNESS LONDON, May 28. The question whether left-handed persons are more inclined to be wicked than right-handed people is raised in the ‘ Lancet,’ the British medical journal, by Dr Charles Macalister, who quotes figures suggesting that the percentage of left-handed criminals is higher than that of right-handed criminals. Dr Macalister recalls that the conventional use of the word “ sinister,” which in Latin means left-hand, originated in the reputed association of lefthandqdness with wickedness, although experience does not indicate that the majority of left-handed persons possess “ a wicked strain.” Nevertheless, left-handed people possess compensation in muscular predominance on the right side, which during smiling causes the elevation of one side of the mouth and one eyebrow a little more than the other, giving archness in expression which is a point of beauty.
