MANCHESTER UNITY

There was a large gathering of Oddfellows on Tuesday evening last, "when the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge received an official visit from sister lodges. The N.G. (Bro. R. J. Dickson) opened the meeting,' there being a good muster of Hand- and' Heart members present. , Business matters' were dealt with preparatory; to receiving the, visitors. The sick visitors’ report disclosed that a good many brethren were on the funds, most of whom! were reported to be making good progress. , The hospital (Bro. Hunt) reported that several brethren were at present inmates of tbe Dunedin Hospital, including «u old and wellknown member of Hand and Heart, Bro. G. Marks. The attendance of visiting brethren was excellent, tbe N.G. extending a welcome to over 100 visitors, representing all, (the city and suburban lodges. Loyal Princess Mary Lodge, with thirty-three members, had tlie largest representation. ■ Harmony was the .order of the evening, an enjoyable programme having been prepared by the Hand and Heart Social Committee. Piano solos were contributed by Bro. Joyce and Sister West, songs by Bro. G. AnselJ, and recitations by Bro. A. Fraser. An instrumental quartet from the Loyal Valley Lodge rendered several popular numbers. A number of topical hits by the Hand and Heart choir created much amusement. Later in the evening the lodge was favoured with a visit from the members of the District Executive, headed by the P.G.M. (Bro. A. L. Hart).' The district officers briefly responded to the toast of the executive, the visitors’ toast being acknowledged by , representatives of : visiting . lodges present. The function concluded with a short dance, Bro. Joyce officiating at the piano. The monthly meeting of the Loyal Tapanui Lodge was presided over, by P.G. Bro. E. M‘Auley, in the absence of the.N.G. There was a large attendance of members. Motions of sympathy were passed with Bros. W. J. and ItA. Rodger in their recent bereavement. Correspondence and several items of business were dealt with, and one member was granted a letter of recommendation to the Loyal Dalton Lodge. Two members from other lodges were placed on the medical list. The officers reported on the annual initiation competition held at Lawrence, and the V.G. (Bro. Fleming) and P.G. (Bro. Peter Thomson) f gave an interesting account of the combined official visit held at Waikaka. The next meeting of the lodge being the half-yearly one, nominations for office were taken, the installation' to take place ■ next lodge night.' Sick visitors reported on members-under their care, it is interesting to note that tbe Tapanui Lodge now possesses the oldest member of the order in Otago district— P.G. Bro. James Steel—who has a membership of sixty-five years, having joined tbe Tapanui Lodge in 1869.
