NOTES ON THE RACING.

[By St. Claiu.]

The climatic conditions at Ashburton were against good times being recorded, and just after the third race a cold rain set in, which made an already dead track still slower. Owing to this Indianapolis was not produced to make an attempt to lower the Australasian record for a mile, 2min 22-3 sec, now jointly held by Walla Walla and Auburn Lad. * '

Jacob (£1214), Win Thru (£BO-i). Prince Harvester (£69), Sonoma King (£6B), Renegrade (£66), and Gaynor (£43 J) were the best backed for the Longbeach Handicap for unhoppled trotters. Jacob, Win Thru, and Renegrade were the smartest of the limit horses to begin, and at the end of half a mile Jacob and Renegrade • had drawn six lengths clear, which they increased to a dozen lengths with half the journey covered. Then Renegrade took command and led Jacob. Car Bingen, and Win Thru round the far turn, where the field began to close up. Modern Lady travelled fast across the top and followed Renegrade, Jacob, and Sonoma King into the straight. Modern Lady finished best and beat Sonoma King by nearly four lengths. Renegrade over a length off third, followed by Prince Harvester, Royal Parrish, and Jacob. * * * * The Dunedin-owned Iraq (£160) was made favourite for the Trial Handicap, with Dundee, by Nelson Derby— Tirane (£1231), Wild Dreams (£1084), Royal de Oro (£93). At the far turn Goldfield had taken charge, and‘led' Cam Dillon and Royal de Oro. Racing across the top the favourite moved up very quickly, and was first into the straight from Gold Claim, Insolvent,' and Dundee. Iraq was in trouble at the distance, where Dundee got a good run oh the rails. Insolvent, Dundee, and Iraq were on even terms 100yds from the post, and in a good finish Dundee scored by a head from Insolvent, with Iraq a length olf third. The course was heavy, and a shower just pner to the Sapling Stakes made it worse and restricted betting on that event. The Gainble-Boltaire bracket was in strong order for .the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, find thenbackers were unlucky not to collect, as the field had gone over a furlong before either struck ins gait. Ironside (£2514), Moana Tama (by Nelson Derby—Thelma Wrack, £211), the Donalda - Graham Direct bracket (£l7O-J), an d Subsidy (£I22J) were the next fancied. , , Radiant Gold led Levity and Ironside over the first furlong.
