OAMARU BREAKWATER
SUCCESSFUL BLAST FOR MATERIAL [Special to the ‘ Stax.’] OAMARU, June 9. The eagerly awaited shot in ■ connection with the Oamaru Harbour Board’s' quarry, on the result of which depends whether the board will go pa with the proposed breakwater extension, was fired at 10130 this morning by the secretary, and witnessed from vantage points by several hundred people. According to Mr Leggo, technical instructor to Nobels (Australia) Ltd., the result was most successful. Prom the spectators’ point of view it looked disappointing, but a large quantity of loose rubble covered tn* best stone. ■ - It is estimated that between 60,000 and 70,000 tons came down. At a meeting of the board afterwards Mr Leggo informed the member* that about 50,000 tons 'would be suit, able for the proposed scheme. Mr Lee, consulting engineer to th* board, also expressed himself confident regarding the suitability of the rock.
