A Veil of Silence

Wyndham Astonished at Departure

’Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright

SYDNEY, April 2. The latest advice from Wyndham ’ states that native runners have been - despatched from the Forest River Mission station to the Drysclalo mission, 100 miles distant, seeking news of the Southern Cross. Runners are the only means of communication, according to tho Wyndham police. The Forest River Mission is thirty miles north-west of Wyndham, and Drysdalc "is 100 miles further iu the same direction. The. Southern Cross carried only sufficient food for three or four meals. Eight inches of rain fell at Windham in twenty-four hours'up to 9 o’clock on Monday morning, but prac- ■ tically none has fallen since. ■ i The ‘ Sydney Sun,’ which is specially interested in the flight, says that mystery envelopes the departure of • Squadron-leader Kings ford Smith, '.Flight-Lieutenant Ulm, and party on Saturday. They were advised on Tuesday to delay the flight until they received an official O.K. from Wyndham. It would now appear that this official message was not received he- ■ cause a telegram from Wyndham on .Saturday afternoon expressed astonishment at their departure, and urged .that the plane must he recalled in view of the dangerous conditions at ■ Wyndham. Squadron-leader Kingsford Smith could not have received ■this information because his aerial . had gone. A veil of silence still covers the airmen. The relief plane, which has fo base its operations on Wyndham, may have difficulty owing to the rain-sodden ground there being unsuitable for landing. STILL NO NEWS. SYDNEY, April 2. There was no word late to-night from the Southern Cross party or the searchers.

No Word of Southern Cross
