VIRGIN OF GAUDELOUPE
A tragic human sacrifice marked Hie feast of Hie Virgin of Guadeloupe, the patron saint of Mexico, in mail week, reports Reuter's correspondcnl. A big crowd had assembled round the church in the little town of San Angel, a few miles from Alexico City, where General Obrcgon was murdered last July. Suddenly Hie hells began lo peal softly, becoming louder every mi mite. Then they died away; and the man who had been ringing thorn appeared on the balcony, of the lower like a muezzin on a minaret. YVith a gesture requesting silence be addressed the crowd; “ This is Hie day of Onr Lady of Guadeloupe,” he said. ‘‘ I am a devotee of the Virgin, and 1 wish to make a sacrifice, in her honour.” The crowd mocked him. “ YVha.l! Yon do not lake me seriously? ” he exclaimed. “ Very well, J am going lo die this instant.” So saying, he threw himself from Hie balcony, and was killed.
