FLOOD DAMAGES.

The Inspector reported on the damages caused by the recent floods us fol-lows:—-As a result of the ■ flood, the thvbiro Creek had overflowed its banks nb Gordon road and also at Burns street, and a considerable scour av;is caused in the following streets Gordon road, Gladstone road, and Burns street. The silt had been removed early on Wednesday, and the road graded and cleaned up as well as possible. These roads would require a recoating of gravel at the earliest convenience. T lie Silver Stream had burst its banks between the Outrani raihva.A line and the Gordon road bridge, and here again all the roads adjacent had been badly scoured and also the footpath in Gordon road, Tweed street, and forth street, and a considerable amount of grading and cleaning-up would require to be done. In factory road, ifryden street, and Morrison street there bad been a congestion of water which was largely attributable to the bolding up of the storm water at the Outram inilway line, the provision made by the J-failways Department being totally inadequate to cope with Urn water, in consequence of which all these streets were flooded. About 25ft of the bank on Mr Grieve’s side of Silver Stream at Gow’s Crossing had been washed away, and carried away portion ol the pipe line with it. Since then the staff had been entirely dependent upon the well Avater, which bad supplied ail requirements. OAving to a short circuit in the .motor it had been found necessary to dismantle it and send it to the electric light and poAver department's testroom for repairs to lie effected. All the borough hands had been employed at Goav's Crossing clearing the stream, removing tons of debris, and constructing a dam to turn the water from the broken end of the pipe. OAving to the rulmUh deposited there and also to the depth of the stream, this had been a long ami difficult job. 'The repair must only be considered as a temporary expedient, and no guarantee could bo given as to flow long it Avould hold out on account of the unstable nature of the bank and I lie. increasing danger of erosion, eighteen inches of tvatcr accumulated in the motor house at the septic tanks, and the rheostat Avas so badly damaged that it was necessary to bring it away to be dried out.
