THE RIVERTON MEETING

NOTES H THE SECOND DAY [By Sx. Cl.uh.] The weather for the second day of tho meeting was almost like a still summer day, and the attendance was very large, £1,222 0s Gd being taken at tho gates,,as compared with £1,151 15s on the same day last year. The grounds and course had dried up well, but the latter was still dead and slow. Tho racing was again interesting, and several of the finishes very close. Backers of first favourites did not have such a good run as on tho opening day, but Wingatui-trained horses again secured tho bulk of the prize-money. Prior to the commencement of the day’s racing Mr W. G. M'Lean, who officiated as stipendiary steward, assembled all the riders, and explained to them that ho was determined to put a stop to foul or careless riding at the meeting, and that ho had tho support of tho Judicial Committee. After the first race W. Cooper, rider of Red Boa, was charged with crossing Luck Light near tho half-mile post, and under part 25, rule 2, he was suspended for fourteen daj's. This and L. J. Ellis’s suspension had tho desired effect, and there was no trouble during tho day. Tho betting was not as good as expected, and the £20,2314 handled represents a decrease of £1.471 as compared with Jast year’s turnover on the second dav.

Mr APlvor’s starting was good, and the three moving-in -starts lie essayed were very excellent despatches. All started in the President’s Hack Handicap, and after the good form she showed on Saturday Lucky Light was made favourite, with Some Form, Attract, and Meitui each well hacked. From a good start Lucky Light, Red Boa, and Attract were the first to show out, hut after going a furlong Attract ran to the lead, and was Just in front of Red Boa, with Lucky Light, Full Fling, and Some Form running next. There was no change in tho leading division rounding the far turn nor racing across tho top. At the homo turn Attract and Red Boa were on even terms, with Full Fling and Lucky Light next, just in front of Some Form, who went out wide. Red Boa was in charge from Full Fling at the distance post, where Lucky Light was finishing fast wide out. In a splendid finish Full Fling lasted long enough to heat Lucky Light by a neck, with Red Boa a good head away third. Banner Boy, Meitui. and Some Form next. Investments, £2,053 (last year £1,8155). In a field of nine in the Waiifii Steeplechase, for horses that had not won a steeplechase of more than IGusovs. Karanga was sent out a better favourite than Nyanza, with Calibration, Erin-go-Bragh, and Fabriano next ■fancied in a poor betting race. Erin-go-Bragh led Karanga, Nyanza, and Fabriano over tho first three fences, Nyanza falling at the post and rails near tho four furlong post. Fabriano joined Karanga and Erin-go-Bragh at the water Jump, where this trio was well clear of the others. Flag Lieutenant fell at tho next fence, and Calibration tripped over him. Karanga and Fabriano led Erin-go-Bragh into the back, but tho former ran off _at the second fence of the double, leaving Fabriano with a good lead from Erin-go-Bragh, the others beaten off. At the big post and rails near the four furlong post both leaders hit hard, and French Fleet fell. Erin-go-Bragh was within a couple of lengths of Fabriano at tho sod wall, hub the latter drew away again to win easily by fifteen lengths. Cazna was a furlong away tliird, and French Fleet was remounted and finished fourth. The win was a very popular one, Riverton being the centre where his owner, P. T, Hogan, commenced his training career. Investments, £1,478* (£2,0393d. The Southern Champion Hack Handicap produced a field of nine starters, and an excellent betting race. Latin Quarter, who was making his first appearance at the meeting, was sent out a better favourite than Terahroney, with Cupid’s Dart, Filosol, and Memho the best backed of the others. Tembroney gave trouble at the start, and when tho barrier rose he got the worst of it. Cupid’s Dart, Filosol, and the favourite were in front when the field settled down, and going into the back stretch Red Sea ran to the front, and led Latin Quarter and Cupid’s Dart to the six furlong post, whore Temhroney ran up, and ho followed Red Sea round the far turn, with Latin Quarter and Rattle Maid next. Racing across the top, the favourite appeared to get snowed in, and Red Sea led Temhroney, Battle Maid, and Latin Quarter into the. straight. At tho distance post APKay pulled the favourite out from the rails, and ran up to Temhroney and Red Sea, and in the best finish ever seen on tho course dead heated with Temhroney, the pair heating Red Sea by a nose. Battle Maid was two lengths away fourth, and followed by Cupid’s Dart and Tabaka. Investments, £3.124 ( £2,8801). Full Fling was withdrawn from the Flying Handicap, and in an even hotting race "Waving Corn was sent out a few pounds better favourite than Arch Arrow, with Money Mine, Battle Flag, and Coomassio next fancied. From an excellent walking-in start Attract was the first to show out, and ho led the favourite and Arch Arrow over tho first two furlongs- Attract was three lengths clear of Coomassio racing across the top, where Waving Corn and Battle Flag were running next. Coomassie led Waving Corn into the straight and at tho distance post Battle Flag pub in a goo.d run wide out. She caught Coomassie and Waving Corn opposite the stand and beat the latter by a length and a-half, with Coomassie, who appeared to stop a little over the last few strides, a head away third. Money Mine and Arch Arrow were next. Investments, £2,420 (£2,7901. _ Apache and Fairy Herald were withdrawn from the Easter Handicap, leaving a field of -six, and in even betting Overhaul was made a slightly better favourite than Wingatni or King Balboa. From another excellent walkingin _ start Circulation led Overhaul, Wingatni. and Some Rose out of the straight, hut before reaching the hack Some Rose took charge and led Wingafcui, Overhaul, and Circulation round the far turn, where King Balboa was lying last. Some Rose led Overhaul and Wingatni into the straight, where King Balboa was still last. Some Bose retired before reaching the distance post, challenged Overhaul, and King Balboa was putting in a great run. Whrgatui Just stayed on long enough to head the fast-finishing King Balboa by a nose. Circulation was a short length away third, followed by Overhaul and Some Rose, Tardy being last. Investments, £2,904 (£3,2391). In a field of eight in the Riverton Steeplechase the betting was almost confined to Kapuna and Nylotis, the former being favourite, and each carried nearly twice as many investments as Greenstone or Blazing Light, who wore the best hacked of the others. Blazing Light and Frenchman led to the first fence, where Windermere fell. Frenchman led Eanni, Blazing Light, and Kapuna over tho gorse fences to the double, where the

latter ran into second place. _ At the post and rails leading hack into tho course Kapuna Joined Frenchman and they were followed by Greenstone, Blazing Light, and Eanni. Kapuna was first over the water Jump from Frenchman, Greenstone, Blazing Light, Nvlotis, and Ilanui. The favourite then drew well clear and led Greenstone, Frenchman, and Nylotis to the back, whore Frenchman was pulled up, having broken down. Kapuna was four lengths in front of Greenstone at the double, with Nylotis and Blazing Light next. Greenstone fell at the ionce leading back into the course and Nylotis moved up to within six lengths of Kapuna at the sod wall. 'J he latter drew away again at the home turn, and ran home a very easy winner from Nylotis by three lengths. Blazing Light, whose rider finished without his irons, and Ranui were 120yds away third. Nyanza rap off early. Investments, £2,256 (£2,4923). Paris and Filosol were withdrawn from tho Wallace Hack Handicap, for which Town Alajor and Narrative carried nearly half the investments, the former being the better backed, and Barney Google and Vinegrove were next in demand. Attractive Lady, Vinegrove, and Barney Google were the first out from a good start, Arrowy being left. Attractive Lady led along tho hack from Narrative, Barney Google, and Lucky Alald. and these were tho leaders across the top and into the straight. At tho distance post Town Alajor put in a good run, but failed to reach Narrative by half a length. Barney Google was a short length away third, followed by Vinegrove, Attractive Ladv. and Lucky Ala id. Investments, £2,522* (£2,304*). All started in the- Alonowai Handicap, for which Apache was made a warm favourite chance, and Overhaul and Camisader the best backed of the others. Camisader was placed slightly in the rear and on the outside of the line at the barrier. Flying Mist on the rails led into the hack stretch from Apache, Overhaul, Camisader, and Fairy Herald, and the field ran in this order to the far turn, where the favourite Joined Flying Alist, and they led Camisader, Overhaul, and Fairy Herald across the top. Apache led Flying Alist and Camisader to the straight, but when heads were turned for home Flying Alist dropped out, and Camisader joined Apache, with Overhaul and Money Alin© next. The latter finished fast, and beat his stable mat© by half a length. Fairy Herald was- a length and a-half away third, and Solzia and The Harp next. Investments £3,472* (£4,134*).
