NOTES ON THE EVENTS
' Tlic scratching of Ell Boa. LarkaWny, Radiant Knight, and Joy Bridge left o field of seven in the Trial Plate. On Watch was made only a few pounds better favourite than Broad field, this pair carrying two-thirds of tho investments. From a straggling start, Star Tractor being badly left, Broadfield showed out from "Wild Berry. Going along the back Broadfield opened out a two lengths’ lead from Wild Berry, who was followed by Gay Fashion, On Watch, and Green Cloth. Wild Berry dropped back racing across the top, and Broadfield was three lengths in front of Gay Fashion at the straight entrance. In tho run home Broadfield won easily from Green Cloth, who came fast to beat Gay Fashion by half a length. On Watch failed to see out the distance. Martis continued his run of country wins by outclassing the small held saddled up for the Lawrence Handicap. His rider, W. Brodie, a brother of B. H. Brodie, who scored his first win in this race, missed the jump out, and Yaldamo shot to the front from Margaret Birney. This pair was four lengths clear of Martis along the hack, while Lady M‘Kenna was not running kindly. Before reaching the far turn Margaret Birney took charge, and Martis deposed Yaldamo for second place, at the straight entrance. Without being ridden out Martis overhauled Margaret Birney, and won easily by three lengths, with Lady M‘Kenna two lengths away, and Yaldamo beaten off. As is usually the case at Lawrence, tho President’s Trot was the medium of a good pool, Imperial Bingen being a pronounced favourite. Knowledge started smartly, but at the end of a furlong he broke up completely Great Star opened out a fifteenlengths lead from Hereweka, Princess Pointer, and Imperial Bingen along tho back, but. tho leader was hard at it with only half the distance covered. Drake hit the front from Imperial Bingen, and with three furlongs to go this pair was eight lengths clear of Princess Pointer. Drake led by two lengths into the straight, when jmperi ial Bingen challenged. The favourite
outpaced tho others at the finish, winning easily from Drake, with Bingen Patcli coming fast into third place. A two-dividend field was left in the Members’ Handicap, for which the Oaraaru-trained Miss Marco was sent out a hot favourite. A surprise was in store, however, as Nanette won well. Star Tractor again failed to jump out at tho barrier rise, and Joy Bridge and Larkaway were the first to break the line. They were just clear of the bunched .field going down the back. Larkaway was the first beaten, and Joy Bridge also gave way when Broadfield challenged at the home turn, with Miss Marco coming fast on the outside. Nanette then came into tho picture. and drew away to win by three lengths from Miss Marco, who caught Brondfield inside the distance. Nothing had a chance with the winner, who was fast drawing away from the field at the finish.
The scratching of Roseday and Lady M'Kenna left a one-dividend field for the Tnapeka Handcap. Carnot was elected a pronounced favourite, hut all with the exception of Unitali found the distance a bit too far. This was Uintah's first success on the flat. Last season he raced proinisingly but unsuccessfully over hurdles. From a pood line Green Cloth was the first to show out from Carnot. Umtali was the slowest to settle down. At the end of, half a mile Green Cloth was still in charge from Umtali, at the head of a closclybunched field. Green Cloth opened out a three lengths’ lead down the back from Umtali, who was two lengths clear of Carnot. Umtali ran to the front at the home bend, and over tbc last two furlongs was not hard ridden to beat Green Cloth, with Carnot dose up. Crossbow was three lengths off. Consequent on her form at Minton, Cytheria. was made a strong order for the Dash Trot, the only others at all well backed being Logan Fay and the bracket Maybird-Thrift. Massey Maid broke up at the start, for which Lady Fay led Drake. Cytheria, Doncliff, Maybird, and Thrift. The order was unchanged down the back. Racing to the far turn Princess Pointer made an early run, but Maybird took charge from Cytberm, Drake, ami Princess Pointer. Maybird stayed at the head of affairs, despite the precarious seat of his rider, to win by a length from Cytheria, who managed to stall off Thrift’s challenge. Drake was fourth. Princess Pointer faded out.
Only three horses were started in the Stewards’ Handicap. Crossbar led Miss Marco throughout. Lady M'Kenna was always in close attendance, and was going freely when she fell through crossing her legs when being brought on the outside a furlong from home. In a hard finish Miss Marco got up to win by a nose from Crossbow. Dooley, the rider of Lady M'Kenna, was not hurt. Although the Flying Handicap was reduced to a fonr-horso race it was a good betting race, Margaret Birncy being made a slightly bettor order than Dancing Days. The favourite was never beaded. Gay Fashion being in second place after a furlong had been covered. Dancing Days nearly fell early in the race, and after making a run round the lop faded out of the picture. Hurdy Gurdy was not prominent at any stage.
