UMTALI WINS THE CHIEF HANDICAP At Lawi'ence conditions were against the success of the Tnapeka County Jockey Club’s annual meeting. The weather was threatening in the morning, ami the special train from .Dunedin did nob appear to be carrying as many as last year. Throughout the clay a biting wind was coming across the course, and two coll, but brief, showers were experienced. The track was a trifle soft on top, but provided good going. Despite the smallness of, the fields in the galloping events the racing was quite interesting. The hurdler Umtali won the Tnapeka Handicap comfortably. Mr J. K. Simpson, the donor of a handsome silver cup, presented the trophy and a silver-mounted whip (given by Mrs A. Blaney) was presented to D. Kerr, who rode a welljudged race on Umtali. The gate receipts showed a slight falling off and the totalisator figures were reduced appreciably, £5,265$ being handled, as against £6,327 last year. The meeting was well managed. The president (Mr G. H. Martin) was busy attending to the management and the entertainment of the visitors and district supporters, while Mr James Hopkins was once again an efficient secretary.
