THE FROZEN SOUTH
TWILIGHT IH ANTARCTICA BYRD PARTY PREPARING FOR WINTER [By Uussru. Owen.] Copyright, 1925, by the ‘ New York Times ' Company and ‘St. Louis Post-Despatch.’ All Rights for Publication Reserved Throughout the World. Wireless to ‘ New York Times.’ BAY OF WIT ALLS, March 28. The grey twilight that comes before the long winter night i.s settling over Antarctica. The sun rises only a short distance above the horizon, and gives little heat. Most of the outside work is done, and there will lie shelter for everyone, and rooms where wo may work or read and pass, the days of darkness in’comfort. A holiday has been declared so that tired muscles may bo rested and energy renewed for the last days of hard work. For three months these men have worked as they would'never have worked under normal conditions, building a house and hauling the bulky heavy material which accompanies aviation. It has been a herculean ta s]<. The Fairchild plane .Stars and Stripes is buried for the winter in a ’ bouse of snow blocks, and the Ford Floyd Bennett will be tucked away on the next cpiict day. The former has made its last flight, and the plane now rests in a snow fort as safe as if it vas run into a hanger. The centre section of the Ford lias been put in place, and the wings of the motor hung. Before putting it away in a dngout of its own yesterday the last of the harrier cache was brought in. This was the material taken ashore while the Flea nor Boling lay alongside the harrier and hauled towards the camp when the weather permitted. The last drums of gasoline and the last bags of coal were brought in yesterday after they had been excavated from tons of snow. Fverytiling about [he camp lias been collected and placed in one pile. The weather i.s now less fickle, the days being clear and cold, while there are beautifully tinted sunsets and a brilliant elongated moon of unfamiliar countenance.
